About Elders …
He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it. — Titus 1:9
Each individual church congregation is to be under the oversight of men who are designated as elders, bishops, overseers, pastors or shepherds, and teachers. Each congregation is to be overseen by a plurality of such men.
The different designations — elders, bishops, overseers, pastors, shepherds, teachers — provide insight into their duties and responsibilities. Elders are to be mature men of superior wisdom and experience. Elders are to watch over all matters pertaining to the congregation. Pastors or shepherds are responsible for the spiritual care and well-being of every soul. Teachers teach, instruct, and direct all members in God’s Word.
The New Testament passages directly related to the office, work, and qualifications of those men responsible for the direction or oversight of each congregation are Acts 20:28-30, 1 Timothy 3:1-7, 5:17-19, Titus 1:5-16, and 1 Peter 5:1-4.
